The ATV industry is constantly evolving. Before the displacement wars were declared, a 500-cc machine was the be all and end all of ATV power. On federate trails today, 650-, 750-, 800- and even 1000-cc ATVs are commonly spotted. BRP is one of the manufacturers responsible for the explosion in engine sizes, offering vehicles equipped twin-cylinder 650-cc or 800-cc engines. For 2009, Can-Am is launching an R version of its famous 800-cc mill, powering the new Outlander Max EFI LTD.
More powerThe new 799.9-cc powerplant generates 9% more power than the previous H.O. version. Thanks to the added punch and the extra torque produced under 6,000-RPM, the 800R Outlander scrambles from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, according to BRP engineers, nearly a second faster than the old model. The liquid-cooled twin-cylinder uses a four-valve-per-cylinder setup and a single overhead camshaft and is fuelled by an electronic injection system featuring a 46-mm throttle body. Apart from the Max EFI LTD, this engine powers the new Outlander 800 R EFI and Max EFI models.
Fantastically equipped The Max EFI LTD boasts a slew of exclusive features: cast aluminum wheels, 26-inch, aggressive-tread radial tires, fender, more comfortable passenger hand grips, exhaust cover, redesigned, heavy-duty front and rear bumpers and handlebar wind deflectors. The LTD also inherits a powerful, factory-installed BRP XL3000 winch. This high-capacity winch includes a handlebar switch and a wired remote control that neatly stows in the front storage compartment. What's more, the 2009 Outlander Max 800R EFI LTD sports an integrated but removable GPS system. On the ATV or in your hands, this 115-megabyte GPS displays a map of your surroundings with an accuracy of 15 metres in normal GPS mode and 3 metres or less when the WASS system is activated. The removable device weighs only 156 grams and features a retractable antenna and WorldMap software.
Other original goodies include a redesigned front fascia providing room for integrated fog lights that gives the ATV a more contemporary and combative air, two-tone, high-end seats and a new Radiant Red Metallic body. Even if the Outlander Max 800R EFI LTD isn't powered by the biggest engine of its class, it remains one of the fastest and most powerful dual-passenger ATVs in the industry, courtesy of its famous V-twin engine now kicking out, in its R incarnation, no less than 70 snorting ponies.
