2010 Yamaha Snowmobiles Preview

Yamaha, a proven leader in quality and reliability, is introducing two new snowmobiles for 2010: the fuel-injected, 4-stroke, 3-cylinder RS Vector as well as the MTX SE 162.

Compared to rival manufacturers, Yamaha uses the most advanced technologies thanks to the expertise from its motorcycle program. The result is a remarkable portfolio of 21 snowmobiles powered by naturally-aspirated, 4-stroke engines, some of which boast an impressive 160 hp/L ratio.

The new RS Vector will be a serious contender for the title of Best Sport Touring Snowmobile of 2010.

The latest evolution of the famous 1,049-cc, 3-cylinder engine is now teamed up with the Delta Box II solo chassis. This highly-anticipated union promises to deliver both power and user-friendliness.

The fuel-injected Genesis 120 engine is a striking performer. The new electronic injection system, added displacement (from 973 cc to 1,049 cc) and revised intake cams produce torque in a nice linear fashion across the usable rev range.

During a short test ride of the new 2010 RS Vector and its predecessor, I did notice significant improvements over the 2009 models, such as more explosive takeoff and acceleration, while the ride is super smooth and the machine easy to handle -- all according to the Yamaha tradition for these machines.

The chassis benefits from firmer rear shock rebound, a wider rear axle, dual toothed driving pulleys (drivers), new bearings and more rigid rails. Ultimately, the goal was to improve riding dynamics on bumpy trails and offer greater stability and traction coming out of corners. It worked -- and wonderfully so!

For 2010, the RS Vector also inherits the racier, more modern rear section of the Apex, a 12-volt outlet, a more comprehensive instrument panel that is easier to read, as well as redesigned heated grips offering improved ergonomics.

Nytro MTX SE 162
The 2010 Nytro MTX SE 162 is blazing an all-new trail for snowmobile enthusiasts. This high-performance, deep-snow machine targets riders looking for a powerful yet nimble 4-stroke sled that can tackle off-trail mountainous terrain.

The MTX SE 162 receives a 162-inch track with 2.25-inch studs for superior traction and floatation than 144- and 153-inch tracks on other Yamaha models. The lighter ProMountain rear suspension uses two specially-designed Fox Float air shocks to eliminate the need for heavy torsion and coil springs.

Yamaha engineers removed the steel torsion springs (and solidified the rails to maintain the same overall rigidity) in order to evacuate under-rail snow more easily, thus allowing the suspension to remain effective after several hours of riding in deep, heavy snow.

An 11-degree pitch to the running boards of the MTX SE 162 improves rear ground clearance for deep snow capability. The 162 also features Yamaha's second-generation front suspension, with front caster gone from 24 to 18 degrees to help with cornering traction and overall floatation. Finally, new A-arms and ski axles reduce front section weight by 1.5kg while improving floatation.

Yamaha is always evolving and looking ahead, and new machines such as the deep snow-busting 2010 Nytro MTX SE 162 are prime examples. As for the new RS Vector, it will be a serious contender for the title of Best Sport Touring Snowmobile of 2010.
