Kymco's ATV lineup evolves with the addition of a sporty 450-cc model for 2011. Last year, the Taiwanese manufacturer launched the new Maxxer 375 whose design and independent rear suspension (IRS) technology marked a radical departure from the small Mongoose 300. Critically acclaimed for its stability and capability, the Maxxer chassis seemed like an ideal platform to receive a more modern and more powerful engine.

The Kymco Maxxer 450i displays well-executed visual aggression with a wide, car-like grille, raised mud guards, full-size floorboards, an upswept, underseat exhaust and five-spoke aluminum wheels. The elegant yet subtle design is enhanced by brushed aluminum-style accents and carbon fibre-simulating stickers. What's more, Kymco offers a large selection of accessories, from basic mirrors to all-aluminum nerf bars that create racier looks and add zero weight.

Kymco genuinely strives to offer customers increasing levels of quality. It's hard indeed to criticize the overall lines, plastics and ergonomics of the latest models.

''We make every effort necessary to ensure that our products meet the expectations of North American buyers,'' says Sdant Cheng, Marketing Director for North America. ''For instance, we've recently built a refrigerated chamber to simulate winter conditions when testing our ATVs. That allowed us to develop and validate more flexible and durable plastics for the rough Canadian climate.''

Attractive pricing
The Maxxer 450i is a real steal, undercutting direct rivals like the Can-Am Renegade 500 ($9,649) and Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 ($8,199) by $1,000 to $1,600. Yet, it comes similarly equipped: fully-independent suspension, (rigid rear axle for Scrambler) solid architecture designed for sporty riding, aggressive looks, rider-selectable 2WD/4WD, high-performing powertrain and CVT.

Extra power and sophistication
The biggest evolution obviously comes from the liquid-cooled, 443-cc, SOHC engine. This new single-cylinder featuring electronic fuel injection represents a major step forward for Kymco. The more sophisticated ignition and injection systems positively improve performance while maximizing effectiveness in all climate conditions, regardless of altitude.

According to Kymco engineers, the powerplant of the Maxxer 450i is more flexible than its carburetor-equipped counterpart. The rider benefits from greater throttle precision, smoother engine dynamics, improved fuel economy, lower emissions and extra low- and mid-range gusto.

The aforementioned CVT is controlled by a car-like shifter located on the left mud guard. It includes reverse, neutral and low/high gearing. A switch near the right handlebar allows the rider to shift from 2WD to 4WD on the fly at any speed.

The IRS answer
The chassis is basically identical to the MXU 375's IRS platform developed in partnership with Arctic Cat. Rear-wheel balance is improved thanks to the newly-positioned brake disc, now mounted on the shaft between the secondary box and the differential. Front geometry has been slightly revised as well, more specifically the rake and steering angles, in order to allow sharper manoeuvrability.

Bottom line
We thought we'd seen it all with the Maxxer 375 and MXU 375, but Kymco upped the ante with the all-new, sport-oriented Maxxer 450i. Those who like to ride on the trails will get plenty of bang for their buck, that's for sure. With generous ground clearance afforded by the IRS suspension as well as a competent 4WD system, the Maxxer 450i becomes an interesting alternative for winter riding enthusiasts who want more than a sedate utility ATV.
