Top 5 GT Motorcycles in Canada

10-16-2014

by Pascal Bastien, moto123.com

Grand-touring motorcycles strive to deliver a comfortable ride with a natural, almost upright riding position, sofa-like seating, a backrest and grab handles for the passenger, and (last but not least) plenty of protection against the elements. Most of them use an 800cc or larger engine, have a big fuel tank, a centre stand, as well as generous saddlebags and cargo racks. Some even feature a heated seat, stereo, GPS, and other communication devices.

Similar to full-on touring motorcycles such as the Honda Goldwing, Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager, and Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, these machines are ideal for fatigue-free, long-distance riding. At the same time, however, they need to offer a small dose of sportiness (agility, handling, braking) and prove versatile enough to easily serve as a daily commuter (work, errands, activities). GT motorcycles are also bulky and pricey, typically ranging from $15K-$20K.

Without further ado, here are Moto123.com's top 5 GT motorcycles available in Canada this year:

No. 5 - Kawasaki Concours 1400 ABS
Demanding GT customers forced Kawasaki to fine-tune the Concours 1400 ABS. Engineers worked extra hard to improve comfort, safety, and riding excitement. The new model features a comprehensive electronic aid package derived from Kawasaki superbikes, as well as a power-adjustable windshield offering increased protection, a new fairing which dissipates engine heat more effectively, larger mirrors, and additional amenities.

Riding the sporty Concours 1400 ABS is more pleasant and rewarding than ever before, which is what GT enthusiasts expect from a company that traditionally puts performance front and centre.

No. 4 - Yamaha FJR1300
The FJR1300 returns with the latest technological advancements to go head-to-head with the best GT bikes in the industry. Classically styled and neatly built, this Yamaha oozes quality. The list of features is pretty impressive: power-adjustable windshield, heated grips, cruise control, ABS, customizable traction control system, 2-mode engine mapping, electronically controlled suspension, adjustable seat and saddlebags, centre stand, and more.

While smooth and compliant over long distances, the Yamaha FJR1300 is not quite as comfortable as the top 3 GT motorcycles in Canada, according to us. On the other hand, it displays superb overall balance inviting you to twist the throttle wide open and attack corners with authority for extra fun on the road, making for a ride and handling combination that's hard to beat. At $18,499, the very satisfying FJR1300 remains a safe bet in the GT segment.

No. 3 - BMW K1600GT
The K1600GT is an exceptional motorcycle that means business when it comes to chassis execution, component selection, electronic aids, and powertrain refinement. Motivated by a unique and buttery smooth, inline 6-cylinder engine, this 342kg GT is loads of fun... provided you're skilled enough to handle it, because it's clearly not the most nimble bike at low speeds.

Comfort, equipment, performance, and build quality are top-notch. BMW only needs to make some fine-tuning for the K1600GT to become the most sought-after private jet on two wheels.

No. 2 - Triumph Trophy SE
The Trophy SE has been Triumph's top GT motorcycle since 2013. Understated in typical German fashion, this Brit has benefited from five long years of development. It might lose some points in the handling department, but there's more than enough features and amenities to compensate, including all the segment's must-haves plus height-adjustable headlights, a power-adjustable suspension, traction control, combined ABS, and a stereo with USB port.

Almost completely shielded from the elements, the rider on the Triumph Trophy SE enjoys regal comfort, predictable riding dynamics, and flawless triple-cylinder performance backed by lovely sound effects. It's a winning combination that barely misses the top spot in our GT rankings.

No. 1 - BMW R1200RT
Despite the previous R1200RT already serving as a benchmark in terms of riding dynamics, BMW went back to the drawing board and made a few tweaks in order to remain ahead of the pack. The new R1200RT is configured more like the R1200GS and boasts a new twin-cylinder boxer engine that's air/liquid-cooled through a pair of small, concealed radiators.

Goodies include a TFT colour display, BMW Motorrad Pro trip computer, fairing-integrated compartments, heated grips and seats, full electronic aids, electronically controlled suspension, navigation, premium audio, LED lighting, and the famous Shifter Pro system that allows you to shift gears without touching the clutch lever. Some of those are pricey options, however, so be careful.

BMW's GT motorcycles are known for their great agility, and the new R1200RT is the best in the segment thanks to a reasonable weight, low-mounted engine, and compact chassis (wheelbase, rake, trail). Advanced technology and ultra-sharp operation elevate it to the top of our GT rankings for 2014.
