2002 Toyota Camry Road Test

7-10-2002

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

While the LE and XLE are decidedly sportier than their predecessors, the optional SE takes this newfound athleticism still upward a notch or two. The SE's sport-tuned suspension makes quite a difference when the road begins to curve as does its 16-inch alloy wheel and tire package. A rear trunk-lid spoiler, fog lights, brushed aluminum interior trim pieces, plus leather wrapped three-spoke steering wheel and shifter are also included. Leather seats are optional on SE and XLE models.

The previous generation car was well made, but the new model shows a great deal of improvement, especially in the use of high quality plastics. Even in standard trim, the Camry displays Lexus-like fit and finish and precision switchgear. Also important to family sedan buyers, interior space is up from last year. Every dimension is larger, yet tall passengers should especially appreciate the exceptional back seat leg and headroom. Drivers on either end of the height scale will find the new optional power adjustable pedals give them more comfort and command of the road.

Like the original Camry, an economical 4-cylinder is available in standard and premium trim levels. Only now, output improves from a conservative 92 hp to a much more satisfying 157. This is partly due to an increase in displacement from 2.0-litres to 2.4, as well as nearly ten years of automotive engineering advancements. The new engine is wonderfully refined too, vibration free at idle while easily coaxed past posted speeds, especially when mated to the standard 5-speed transmission. Some acceleration drama is lost on the 4-speed automatic, which is better matched to the Camry's liquid smooth 192-hp 3.0-litre V6.

Safety features include dual airbags, optional side airbags with front and rear side-curtain protection, child safety locks and ABS, optional on the LE but standard XLE and SE.
