2002 Mazda MPV Road Test

7-18-2002

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

During its Canadian press launch, Mazda guided us through the paradisiacal backcountry surrounding British Columbia's Cultus Lake. Its two-lane stretches of winding tarmac perfectly suited the MPV's formidable ride and handling characteristics. Its independent front and torsion beam axle rear suspension, with MacPherson struts and dual stabilizer bars, is competent at high speed, stable during long sweeping corners and composed over uneven pavement.

The Mazda also has the most inviting cabin in its class. Quality materials are mixed with an attractive design, highlighting an upscale ambience. Three trim packages are available depending on your need for pampering. The well equipped base DX, comes standard with air conditioning, 4-speaker AM/FM/CD audio with steering wheel controls, an adjustable steering column, colour-keyed bumpers and Mazda's 'Tumble-Under' third row seat that folds away to make a flat floor or tumbles rearward for tailgate parties.

A convenience package adds a cassette player, cruise control, front passenger under seat storage tray, overhead console, power door locks, power heated mirrors and power windows for front and rear doors - a Mazda minivan exclusive.

The LX adds four-wheel ABS with EBD, cruise control, keyless remote entry with burglar and panic alarms, engine immobilizer, tinted glass, illuminated entry, height and tilt adjustable driver's seat, upgraded cloth upholstery and seatback tables. You can option this package out with side airbags, rear air conditioning and dual power sliding doors, plus 16-inch alloy wheels with the towing package.

Alternatively you can get the rear air conditioning system, towing package and side air bags with the LX sports package, plus a leather wrapped steering wheel, seat side table, fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, traction control and a nine-speaker premium audio system that includes a 6-disc in dash CD player. The optional GFX package adds a front and rear air dam and side skirts for a truly sporty looking minivan.
