2002 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX

6-8-2001

by Éric Descarries , Guide Auto Francité

The car is light (a little more than 3,000 lbs or some 1,360 kilos) but I felt its structure to be very strong. Suspension is smooth and firm. It allows a smooth ride on highways and very good road handling on winding roads. Experienced drivers will know how to use it in more serious driving. The 205/55VR16 Bridgestone Potenza RE92 tires help a lot here (but if you intend to drive this car in winter, may I suggest a set of more aggressive winter tires?). Braking goes through discs, front and rear, helped by an ABS system. I found them efficient during normal use. Sometimes, such an all-wheel-drive car does not require that much braking before hitting a curve. Once again, experienced drivers will know how to use this mechanical configuration in fast curves. Be careful though, not to imitate those drivers in the WRX commercials. These are real rally drivers who know how to send the car sideways to gain momentum. Vision is good all around even if there is a big rear spoiler on the trunk lid. By the way, the engine noise is not as intruding as I thought it would be. Actually, on the highway, it is quite quiet as it turns around 3,000 rpm at reasonable speed.

The interior is as good looking as the exterior. The Momo steering wheel really matches with the car as does the perforated aluminium pedals. Steering is precise and instrumentation is simple but easy to read thanks to its large dials. HVAC and radio controls are logically set in the middle of the dashboard. Front seats are quite comfortable and offer good side bolster, a must for such a car. Rear passengers get similar treatment (at least two of them!) and there is a retractable armrest behind which there is a trap to reach the trunk. The latter is big enough for the passengers' luggage and its sill is very low.
