OK, this is a stratospheric price, especially considering the aforementioned Porsche Cayenne S, also boasting a 340-hp V8, starts extremely well featured at a mere $78,250, $16,250 less. The Porsche is also a capable off-road vehicle, something the X5 was not specifically designed for.

I have a few other complaints too. While its 5-speed automatic with Steptronic manual shift mode is good, it shifts up a gear on its own when it hits redline. This is hardly the way a sports model should behave and unlike the Porsche Cayenne and Infiniti FX45, or even the Acura MDX and Mitsubishi Endeavor that each hold the chosen gear until manually shifted - unless in Drive mode of course. What's more, where's the 6-speed manual? Being targeted to BMW's M clientele, this enthusiast's X5 should at least offer a do-it-yourself gearbox optionally.

But gripes aside the BMW X5 4.6iS is one of the best of its category I've ever driven. For sure new competition in its market has become a factor, but BMW's top-line sport utility can hold its head high and proud despite its age.
