2003 Kia Spectra GSX Road Test

7-25-2003

by Alexandra Straub , Canadian Auto Press

But when it comes to handling, the Spectra did not perform as well as its European inspired looks suggested it should. Its capabilities around corners are only so-so, mostly due to its rather soft suspension and skinny P185/65 R14 tires. I found that executing turns on the previously mentioned winding highway was not particularly reassuring. Strangely enough I found the sprite little Rio RX-V managed the curves more precisely. Nevertheless, the saucy Spectra includes a standard set of 14-inch alloy wheels, and its tires are all-season and therefore equipped for most weather conditions. In addition to tires with tread on the front wheel drive Spectra, the GSX has a decent set of brakes; power assisted front disc and rear drums. ABS is not available however.

The budget minded Spectra GSX is more than just a point A to B car, it offers comfort, convenience, fun, and an impressive 5-year 100,000 km bumper-to-bumper warranty. (Photo: Alexandra Straub, Canadian Auto Press)
All in all the 5-door, Summer Rain Silver colored Spectra sedan proved to be a reliable point A to B vehicle, yet with perks. It has a great sound system, comfortable seats, convenient power windows, and sufficient power making it relatively fun to drive. It's good on gas and comfortable to sleep in when a drastic situation comes along. What more can a budget minded shopper ask for? OK, how about no added destination charge? Not bad. And a 5-year, 100,000 km bumper-to-bumper warranty? Awesome.
