Of course, when owners take to the internet to tell others about their experience with a car, they'll usually complain more easily then they'll compliment. Owners often seem dissatisfied with the Optra's 'thin' sheetmetal, showing surprise at the ease with which it can be dented. Fuel efficiency, additionally, is not one of the Optra's strong points- even given its relatively small and meager engine. Squeaks, rattles and a weak air conditioning system round out commonly reported negatives.

Looking for a used Optra? You'll also want to consider machines like the more common and proven Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla / Matrix and even the Mazda3 / 3 Sport. You'll pay more for a comparable model here, the tradeoff being more proven reliability and long term performance.

Optra was far from what you'd call a sales success- so reports of common mechanical or electrical problems are inconclusive. On the plus side, with a 100,000 kilometre warranty, you'll likely find a used model with some portion of its coverage still available for a relatively low price.

Major recall items dealt with exterior lighting. Low-beams or running lights could stop working thanks to a melted wiring connector, while the brake lights may not illuminate when the pedal is pressed. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand why these situations could be dangerous.

Another interesting recall dealt with possibly defective front seatbelts that could prevent an occupant from being released when the button was depressed. Your Chevrolet dealer can advise you on whether or not any recall-related work is left outstanding on a model you may be looking at- provided you have the VIN number available.

Being a budget car, it's important to try and ascertain whether or not the particular unit you're interested in was well maintained. Are engine oil and transmission fluid clean and fresh or dirty and burnt? Engine oil should be a light to medium shade of golden brown- not black or tar-like. Automatic transmission fluid should be a near blood-red color.

Check the condition of the tires for signs of excessive wear or alignment issues, and note the condition of the brakes, where possible. Are the rotors clean and smooth, or rusty and gouged? If the latter is the case, you'll soon be investing in a brake job.

Given limited long-term reliability data, buying a used Optra that's gone through a vigorous inspection from a Chevrolet dealer would be a good idea. It's not necessarily a model that's worrisome- though it's important to scrutinize your choice as the Optra is largely un-proven.

Though you may find a more familiar vehicle to be a more comfortable buy, an Optra in good shape with a thumbs-up from a dealer mechanic may prove a decent choice to shoppers prioritizing flexibility and price.
