2004 Ford Freestar Quick Drive

9-17-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

This brings me to the Freestyle's cabin overall. Its design, materials and fit and finish are very good, better than average and not bad at all, in that order. In more precise detail, I like the general layout of the controls. It's an attractive cabin, clean, understated and ergonomically sound. Little details such as the 'conversation mirror', a convex mirror integrated into the overhead console that lets driver and front passenger (i.e. mom and dad) keep an eye on all those in the back, could be very handy for solving arguments. Also, the flip up middle seats might offer the easiest access to the third row I've yet to try out.

All doors closed with a solid thunk giving the perception of quality, and the cabin was as quiet as any minivan I've tested, adding to the robust feeling. The steering wheel was comfortable with great thumb indents in the best positions for optimal hand placement, and all other controls were intuitively positioned where they needed to be. I was disappointed with the loosely assembled turn signal and wiper stalks, especially compared to those in the Honda, but could live with the impropriety. It's also important to reiterate that the Ford vans in question were all slightly preproduction, the first run off the line and possibly prone to one or two imperfections more than those that will be produced when the plant is in full operation.

I like the way the turn signals were integrated into the outside mirrors though, a visibility feature that adds to the van's overall safety. On the subject, the Freestar makes available Ford's Safety Canopy System, which includes a variety of protective features highlighted by side-curtain airbags for all three rows of occupants. Top of the line vans can be had with reverse sensing parking assist too, a really handy option that can not only save a possible dent in the sheetmetal, but might even save the life of a small child.
