2004 Lexus LS 430 Road Test

11-18-2003

While weight can't help but affect lateral acceleration, the LS sports new monotube shock absorbers for quicker response in corners and an even smoother ride. The tires are 17-inches in diameter on redesigned alloy wheels, but if the optional sport suspension is chosen 245/45R18 low-profile performance tires join 18-inch wheels for improved driving dynamics. application of 18-inch wheels and tires on the LS. Adding the sense of control, refinements to the steering geometry benefit turn-in and high-speed stability.

The brakes have been upgraded too, with the LS 430's ABS enhanced 4-wheel ventilated discs clamping down to reduce forward momentum at a rapid rate. The binders also feature electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), making light duty of panic situations. But it's not just the speed the LS goes about stopping, it's the smooth, controlled process no matter the road surface or weather conditions that imbibes confidence.

There were plenty of curved, undulating roads in and around Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, where Lexus introduced the updated 2004 model. I zipped up and down side byways edging the river and lake, gawking at turn of the century architecture that had me musing on episodes of "This Old House." I didn't expect to enjoy driving the big sedan as much as I did, mostly because Lexus doesn't exactly have a name for performance. Of course, after reading the paragraphs above you'll note this 'image' is now at least unfounded.

Truly, few competitors come close when it comes to the ride and handling compromise. At high speed it glides along effortlessly, securely planted in its lane. It doesn't float either, an unnerving imbalance that is common among comfortable riding luxury cars.
