2004 Malibu MAXX Preview

That last item connects to a fairly robust 3.5-L V6 powerplant, capable of 200-hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. It's not particularly sophisticated, with only twelve overhead-valves, but achieves decent fuel economy at 11.2 L/100 km (21 mpg) in the city and 8.1 L/100 km (29 mpg) on the highway, just the same. The 4-speed electronic transmission that connects to it isn't quite as flash as some of the latest five and even six-speed automatics that are currently becoming almost commonplace among GM's competitors, but the world's largest automaker has a solid reputation for building great automatic gearboxes.

When the Malibu MAXX is introduced later this year it will fill a niche in the market currently empty. It's high time a midsize 'sedan' offered hatchback usability, especially one that has such promising performance and an expectedly affordable price. The new MAXX will give us a little European-style functionality in a very domestic brand. That's refreshing.
