2004 MINI Cooper Classic Sport Road Test

8-5-2004

The Classic model is the cheapest ticket to the MINI world, but just the same this Cooper is far from basic. Conveniences

such as electric windows and mirrors, air conditioning, keyless locking and entry, and a 'Premium' six-speaker audio system with CD player - all features that would normally be optional on budget-friendly cars - are standard fare here. The safety features list has remained intact with the Classic, so front and side airbags are standard. As for its brakes, the Classic's setup wouldn't be out of place on a 7-Series. It features four-wheel discs, ABS with brake force distribution and Cornering Brake Control. Being that this particular car was fitted with the runflat tires, a tire pressure monitor was also thrown in. Despite its base designation, this is hardly a low rent car. Making the move from my comparatively basic Mk III Jetta daily driver seemed like a five-star all-expenses paid vacation from the ordinary.

In order to cut back on the cost of the Classic model, several standard features in the regular Cooper have been removed.

Some savings come from limiting paint coatings to four non-metallic hues, plus the choice of only white or black body accents. There's no rear spoiler, plus the Classic deletes chrome trim. The biggest money-saver is the exclusion of the xenon headlamps, but the halogen bulbs this car is equipped with are so powerful, HIDs aren't necessary. Another money-saving delete comes from the removal of BMW's ASC+T (traction control) system. The other limitation to the Classic package is the removal of an options list, but for the choice of the Sports package, hood stripes and CVT transmission.
