2004 Toyota Prius Road Test

8-27-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

Just in case you're not totally familiar with hybrid gas-electric technology, the Prius doesn't need to be plugged in to an electrical outlet overnight to recharge. Simply drive it like you would a regular gasoline powered car, filling it up with fuel when it nears empty. You just won't have to fill it up anywhere near as often, a promising prospect considering the recent rise in fuel costs.

To ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible, Toyota is offering an impressive warranty package for Prius customers. (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press)
And for doing the right thing, Toyota will follow suit and do the right thing with the Prius warranty. On top of the brand's 36 month/60,000 km basic warranty, an additional 5-year/100,000 km warranty covers powertrain components. Hybrid-specific components, that include the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are warranted for 8 years/160,000 km. Prius customers also get 7-day/24-hour roadside assistance for 36 months.

Hybrid technology has now gone mainstream, what are you waiting for? (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press)
So what are you waiting for? Gas prices to increase even more? That's inevitable, already stretching to 91.9 cents per liter for regular unleaded in Vancouver yesterday. With Toyota's new Prius, escalating fuel costs won't put a dent into your wallet, while leaving little to complain about with regards to creature comforts and driving dynamics. Hybrid technology has now gone mainstream, with the Prius at the top of the heap. It should be considered by anyone considering buying a new car.
