(40 hp) and 40 kw (54 hp) respectively and a nickel-metal hydride battery developed by Varta. The compact battery is located in the spare tire well, in the trunk.

Power from these motors is transferred through a series of gears which creates an infinitely variable drive system, instead of a CVT gearbox. What sets the GM Two-Mode system apart from others is that the motors and gears are packaged together in a space no larger than that of a conventional automatic transmission.

Depending on driving conditions, the Two-Mode hybrid system works in two ways - on full electric power for zero emissions and zero fuel consumption, or on full diesel power with electrical assist. A complex electronic controller determines which mode is chosen.

For driving in congested, urban areas, the system selects the full-electric mode, helping keep fuel consumption below 4.0 L/100 km on the mixed cycle. Not only does the hybrid

system yield a 25 percent decrease in fuel consumption, it also betters all current gasoline-electric hybrids currently produced.

Unlike gasoline-electric hybrids sold in North America which feature anemic, economy-minded engines, the Opel's turbodiesel is an inherently strong performer. With the boost it receives from its electric motors, it is capable of achieving levels of performance found only in models which feature larger engines, a similar concept to that which Lexus used in the development of its gasoline-electric RX400h.
