2006 BMW X5 3.0i Executive Edition Road Test

7-12-2006

by Matt St-Pierre , Auto123.com

The Executive Edition

This special edition of the X5 is a promotional value-added package that is offered with both the 6 and 8-cylinder trucks. Among the items included in this package are: a panorama sunroof, Dakota leather seats, 18" star-spoke alloy wheels and the Activity Package (running boards, parking assistance and headlamps washers). The retail value of the options is $2,500 more than the asking price. This is a rare deal from BMW.

Nearing the end
The 2007 model year should be very short for the present X5 as an all-new X5 SAV is scheduled to arrive in dealer showrooms in late 2006. With it, we will be able to expect the new I6 3.0L engine, a 350 + hp 5.0L version and very potent "is" with well over 400 hp.

Competition is extremely fierce in the luxury vehicle segment. 1/3 of all sales are SUVs and because the BMW is showing its age, there are other trucks available that are equal or superior to the X5 at the moment. If
BMW stays true to itself, and it will, the next generation X5 should knock the category on its rear. At the moment though, it still remains a great choice for those that are looking to combine driving pleasure with luxury.

The X5's pricing begins at $59,500 and climbs to over $85,500. I tested a 3.0i Executive Edition and it retails for $65,900.
