2007 Honda CR-V First Impressions

10-30-2006

Rear passengers
The versatility of the cargo area doesn't interfere at all with rear-passenger space. The middle portion of the seat can be moved forward on its tracks, which helps parents install a child seat and be able to reach it to wipe the kid's nose or mouth. If the lateral support of the seats is somewhat limited, the backrest angle is adjustable, and the seat cushions are comfortable for long trips. Legroom is equally generous, even for tall people.

Honda's engineers made the right decision, in my opinion, to improve on the powertrain instead of being charmed by the sonority of a V6; a few more horsepower, more torque and a better transfer of available power and traction in four-wheel drive models. If we're currently enjoying a drop in gas prices, it won't last for long.

Only one transmission
For North America, Honda chose to offer one sole gearbox in all models, a 5-speed automatic. We're going to argue this decision, since it raises the suggested retail price of the CR-V

and prevents Canadians from opting for a 5-speed manual, which is offered elsewhere in the world. Over 10% of CR-V sales in our country were equipped with a manual gearbox. The two-wheel drive LX could've been sold for about $25,000 with such a transmission.

Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive?
Honda chose to offer a front-wheel drive version of its CR-V, new for 2007. This decision allows buyers to benefit from the ergonomics of this compact SUV at a lower price. The front-wheel drive setup is only available in LX trim. Honda product planners figure that model will represent only 10% to 15% of total sales. After trying out both versions, we were pleased by the handling and behavior of the front-drive CR-V. We think its proportion of sales will be greater than what the product planners predict. Note that the LX version is also offered with all-wheel drive, just like the EX trim.

Behind the wheel
The driving position is vastly improved, thanks to the height-adjustable seat as well as the tilt and telescopic wheel. The round dials are constantly illuminated and benefit from an excellent visibility at any

moment. The central display between the two dials is easy to read. The relocated shift lever falls easily within hand's reach. The only downside is that I often unintentionally engaged the parking brake with my foot; I had to get used to putting my foot elsewhere to avoid it. The front seats, cloth (LX and EX) or leather (EX-L), offer good lateral support, and back support will suit most sizes. I liked the plastic finish of the dashboard in all versions. Obviously, the EX and EX-L models benefit from a higher finish level.
