2007 MAZDASPEED6 Road Test

6-6-2007

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Subtle looks
A sharp eye will distinguish the MAZDASPEED6 from other 6 sedans at first glance, but the visual differences are minor. A hood bulge, a bigger air intake in the front bumper, different wheels, a rear spoiler and a sportier bumper are the notable changes.

Buldging hood, massive front air dam and different 18'' wheels set the MSP6 apart from the regular 6.

Inside, silver trim and aluminum pedals brighten up the otherwise dark cockpit. The navigation system screen flips out of the dash every time you start up the car, which will impress your buddies. This GPS-based system works pretty well and its guidance is easy to follow. However, the map doesn't display every street name, which makes finding your way in an unknown neck of the woods more challenging.

The front seats are bolstered and hold you in place like a cast holds a broken arm. The rear-seat accommodations hold two adults comfortably, but an occupant in the middle will feel the fold-down armrest in his or her back. Legroom is also a little precious back there.

The sound system with 6-CD changer is pretty good, but most Mazdas are plagued with an inability to read MP3 files. Come on, Mazda, wake up and smell the CDs burning!

Competition
This MAZDASPEED6, equipped with the leather package and navigation system, costs $41,395. If the one you choose is painted black, you can also get two-tone leather. While it doesn't exactly sound like a bargain at first, you'll be hard pressed to find another sedan with all-wheel drive and as much power and equipment.

An Audi A4 3.2 Quattro boasts 255 horses and with optional navigation costs $52,375. A BMW 328xi has 230 horsepower and costs $46,500 with optional navigation. An Infiniti G35x flaunts 306 horses and with navigation costs $49,640. A Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Spec.B offers 243 turbocharged horsepower and costs $44,995. The Mazda might lack the prestige of the Audi and BMW, or even the Infiniti, but it's indeed a low-priced alternative.

Or, if you think that there's no substitute for cubic inches, you could always opt for a Dodge Charger R/T AWD, which costs $43,040 once you add a navigation system. But, although both cars are as quick in a straight line, the MSP6 is a better-handling car.

Turbocharged MZR 2.3L 4-cylinder pumps out a commendable 270 hp.
