2007 MINI Cooper Road Test

7-16-2007

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Two things nag me inside the MINI. First, the CD player is picky; it has a really hard time reading the discs I slide in it, especially the ones filled with MP3 files, which the player spits out after 10 or so songs. At least the sound output through the 6 speakers is excellent.

Also, rear legroom is just inadequate. For an adult to be reasonably at ease, the front occupants must move their seats forward all the way, which can complicate things for the driver. This vehicle is clearly not intended for carpooling or hauling the family.

Interior volume is limited, so expect to hear whining coming from the back seat.

Conclusion

This 2007 MINI Cooper carries a base price of $25,900, and the test car includes the $1,900 Premium Package (sunroof, heated seats, automatic headlamps, trip computer) as well as the $1,390 automatic, for a total of $29,190. That's a lot of money for a subcompact, but it's a premium car that won't cost much for gas. Note that MINI just introduced an entry-level model that's less equipped and doesn't have as many option and colour choices, the $22,950 Cooper Classic.

Does the Cooper have any real adversaries? Not many, as least not in America. We can possibly compare it to the Honda Civic Coupe EX automatic ($24,080), or maybe the smart fortwo passion with a bunch of options ($23,075). There's also the 3-door Volkswagen Rabbit 2.5, which costs $24,010 with a similar level of equipment. Finally, let's not forget the new Volvo C30 2.4i that starts at $29,645 with an automatic.

The MINI Cooper is a car that we can adore despite some shortcomings. It won't turn heads like it did in 2002, but it will remain an attraction if you live in a small town. The Cooper is a pure pleasure to drive even without the turbo engine, but its limited practicality tarnishes its high purchase price. However, if you're the selfish type and can't resist buying a MINI, here's my advice: get the hood stripes, as they only cost $130 more...

Cute as a button
Fun handling and steering
Extremely low fuel consumption (super unleaded)

A center armrest costs $750
The CD player doesn't like its job

Lack of rear legroom
