2007 Nissan 350Z Roadster Road Test

4-14-2007

Zooooooommm!
Now you're ready to start the engine. Zooooooommm... The famous VQ35 that Nissan also uses in its Altimas, Quests, Maximas and Muranos reaches a peak inside the Z and you're already falling for it.

A rich and delightful sound.

It begins with an exciting, humming exhaust note that manages to echo inside your body. You shift the autobox in "D" mode and, with a gentle tap on the aluminum throttle pedal, you know that the fun is only beginning.

With 287 horsepower delivered through a 5-speed automatic transmission (306 hp with the 6-speed manual), the 350Z sprints from 0 to 100 kph in just over six seconds. Accelerations provided by the rear wheels are powerful and linear. Finding back momentum after slowing is executed with great flexibility. This roadster is always stable, rigid and well balanced.

What's more, the steering is precise and very addictive for the driver. The suspension is judiciously firm with a bit of dryness that enthusiasts love so much during tight turns. Braking maneuvers are dynamic, which is not surprising since the car is equipped with Brembos.

In short, the 350Z is a real and solid sports car. If it were not for those darned speed limits...

Finding peace on the track
That's why you would be wise to find a closed track or at least a quiet stretch of road with a desert traffic circle. You do a few laps and gain more and more speed. The 18-inch tires get hot, but the car's behavior remains pleasantly predictable. A near-perfect weight distribution (53:47) makes the roadster stick to the tarmac like a bee to a honey toast.

There's no denying all the chills and thrills the 350Z gives you.

The time has come to drive down the highway where, obviously, most heads are turning in your direction. Man, this car does not age! Even after five years, its cutting-edge yet somewhat retro styling is still very attractive. You can't spot a single wrinkle!

A design that defies time.
