In a nutshell: If you adjust your side mirrors properly - as I did - there are no blind spots on the S80; thus, there is no need for a blind spot warning system. Having said that, as long as the speed differential between you and other cars is within the proper range, the system does reliably light up and warn you to check your blind spots. | 2007 Volvo S80 (Photo: Mark Hacking) |
Of all the hi-tech features on the new S80, the coolest is the world's first Personal Car Communicator (PCC). This remote control not only unlocks the car, but also can be used to monitor security from a distance. While approaching the car, the touch of a button can signal whether the doors are locked or the alarm has been activated. The PCC even has a heartbeat sensor to warn you if someone is hiding inside the car. Very James Bond-ish and, ultimately, a great safety feature. All told, the 2007 Volvo S80 is a significant accomplishment for the manufacturer and an enticing new entry in the midsize luxury sedan segment. Can it build on the momentum generated by the original? That's a safe bet. Even in Las Vegas. Note: Pricing for the 2007 Volvo S80 has not been finalized. The I6 version is expected to be in the mid-$50Ks (CDN), while the V8 will be in the mid-$60Ks.
