2008 Chevrolet Malibu First Impressions

11-15-2007

Moving up the ladder, we find the 2LT model ($25,995), which should become the lineup's top seller. Premium seats with power adjustments, aluminum wheels and a remote starter are in the mix.

Finally, the high-end LTZ model is the only one that comes standard with the V6 (in fact, the latter is not even optional with lower-end models). It also adds the 6-speed autobox, 18-inch wheels, leather seats, automatic climate control and XM satellite radio. However, you might need to resort to your secret stash, because this Malibu starts at $33,600. Chevrolet expects that 10 percent of all Malibus sold will be LTZ models.

The Malibu shares its platform with the Saturn Aura.

The automaker is pitting the 2008 Malibu against such fan-favorites as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, hoping to lure in new customers. From a pricing standpoint, the Chevrolet has an edge. We'll have to wait and see if the new, better executed package will conquer hearts.

A step forward
On the road, the Malibu is a gracious performer. Sure, the 4-cylinder mill struggles during aggressive climbs (even more so with the Hybrid model, which is strange since it's the same engine), but you quickly forgive it for this shortcoming. Of course, the V6 barely broke a sweat and vigorously unleashed its 252 horsepower on Pacific Highway.

The steering is fairly precise but heavily assisted, failing to provide any kind of road feedback to the driver. As you can probably guess, it makes the Malibu's driving experience less rewarding.

Yet, in terms of ride and comfort, the new generation is a definite step forward and quite possibly a serious threat to the most popular midsize sedans. What's more, the Malibu now boasts a higher resale value. Indeed, the Californian firm in charge of these evaluations gave the Malibu a 39-percent residual value after four years, which is awfully close to the Camry's (42 percent).

That's one more sales argument for GM. The American automaker now enjoys a more enviable position to boost its sales figures and capitalize on its newfound momentum.
