2008 Chrysler Sebring Limited Convertible Road Test

11-6-2007

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

A reliable engine
Admittedly, the Sebring Convertible moves around almost effortlessly. Granted, our tester was a top-of-the-line Limited model boasting a 235-hp 3.5L V6. Needless to say that, once the roof comes down, your hair is flying into the wind with absolutely no chance of staying intact.

The 3.5L V6 is the most powerful engine in the Sebring lineup.

Seriously though, accelerations are surprisingly quick yet smooth and progressive. The Sebring lacks a bit of "oompf" but, fortunately, the powertrain can sustain higher revs long enough to allow convincing sprints on the fly.

The steering is satisfying, although I would have appreciated more road feedback and a better on-center feel. Handling is not perfect but still rewarding... provided that you don't drive your Sebring on a racetrack.

A great tourer?
The convertible's main flaw -- and a major one, I might add -- is the fabric top, which is far from up to the standards of true great tourers in terms of comfort and quietness. Wind noises easily find their way into the cockpit, forcing passengers to raise their voice at higher speeds. But that's not all: under heavy rain, small drops even managed to leak through the roof of our tester.

While occupants enjoy plenty of room, the seats offer average support, especially those in the back. On the road, the Sebring could make better use of its weight distribution; negotiating a series of sharp turns can be dizzying at times.

Yet, in the end, the Chrysler Sebring Convertible is certainly worthy of consideration. It has style, attitude, functionality and a convenient power-folding top that completely disappears in just a few seconds -- all for a pretty reasonable price. The Sebring is a wise choice... if you drive it wisely.
