2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 First Impressions (video)

7-3-2008

Solid in corners
Handling is surprisingly good. I was able to complete a 20-minute session on various byroads as well as a series of tests on a slalom course specifically designed for SRT models. The Challenger's comfort level and sure-footedness were impressive. While I was expecting a firm suspension with a stiff rear axle, I found the latter to be quite compliant. The resulting ride is magnificent, with minimal hops on bumpy roads. Kudos to Chrysler engineers.

This coupe handles naturally through twists and turns.

The car is pretty responsive in corners, warning the driver when the rear end is about to slip away. Oversteer is progressive, which allows you to feel the car and adjust the trajectory by fine-tuning the angle of the steering wheel and modulating the throttle.

The folks at Dodge recommended me to avoid using the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) in order to fully exploit the potential of the Challenger. The ESP can either be partially or totally switched off via a dashboard-mounted control. On the track, this allows you to get the most out of the car and push it to the limit.

This coupe handles naturally through twists and turns. As a rear-wheel drive car, the Challenger SRT8 tends to oversteer, but it's also nose-heavy so if you come into a corner too fast, expect some understeer. I never got tired of dancing with the Challenger. The beast left me yearning for more time on the track.

Limited numbers
Only a few 2008 SRT8 models are being produced until the full Challenger lineup hits the market this fall. Four different models will be available in Canada for 2009, but regardless of the trim level, this car is bound to make big waves.
