2008 Ford Escape 4x4 XLT Limited Road Test

9-27-2007

by Justin Pritchard , Auto123.com

The 4x4 system is invisible- offering no locking mode or low range setting though it exhausts every possibility for extracting traction from the turf before giving up. Some drivers may wish for a more hands-on setup, but this system is really very good. Make sure you leave the traction control off to ensure full control of the vehicle remains in your hands.

Check one out?
Definitely- especially if you're considering any other small SUV from the Escape's lengthy list of competitors. It comes fully loaded at around $38,000- but there's plenty of room to strip non-necessary options and trim the pricetag if you so desire.

The $38,000 Escape comes complete with a navigation system.

There is a four cylinder model available, as well as a highly-acclaimed hybrid-powered version. Each powerplant is available mated to front-wheel-drive only should that suit you better.

You can find more quietly powered and plusher machines at this price point, but Escape's updated style and comfortable capability should keep it more than competitive.
