2008 Ford Escape XLT AWD Road Test

1-6-2008

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Competition
A multitude of compact SUVs are trying to steal sales away from the Escape. This test model is an all-wheel drive XLT V6 that sells for $28,899. The options list includes the Convenience package ($395), the Towing package ($495), the Cargo area convenience package ($225), the navigation system ($3,145) with SIRIUS satellite radio ($200) as well as the sunroof ($1,095), for a grand total of $34,454.

At $28,899, The Escape XLT V6 4WD is well priced.

Here's a list of similarly-equipped rivals, excluding the numerous options:

Chevrolet Equinox LT 1SC AWD, $32,320
Dodge Nitro SXT 4WD, $28,395
Honda CR-V EX, $32,690
Hyundai Tucson GL V6 AWD, $28,795
Jeep Liberty North, $28,645
Kia Sportage LX-V6 AWD, $29,235
Mazda Tribute GS-V6 AWD, $29,395
Mitsubishi Outlander LS 4WD, $26,998
Nissan Rogue SL AWD, $29,598
Pontiac Torrent GT AWD, $32,975
Saturn VUE XE AWD, $31,575
Subaru Forester 2.5XS, $31,295
Suzuki Grand Vitara JX, $27,145
Toyota RAV4 V6, $31,900

For under 29 grand, this Escape is priced competitively.

Conclusion
Even with this freshening, the Ford Escape is far from perfect. It's not as refined as many rivals, which is normal, since this SUV didn't get the total redesign it deserved.

However, let's make believe for a minute that we're a compact SUV buyer. We'll certainly notice that the Escape is easy to drive, spacious, practical and offers a price and model range that is quite interesting.

In the end, if you absolutely must own a near-perfect vehicle, look elsewhere. But if you try out an Escape and it pleases you, this little truck still has a lot to offer.
