2008 Honda Pilot SE-L 4WD Review

6-1-2008

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

Knowing that one's family is properly protected brings peace of mind and allows greater enjoyment of the Pilot's many other attributes such as its smooth ride and refined operation. The vehicle imparts a sense of solidity as it absorbs road irregularities while its V6 mill revs smoothly, free of strain and unpleasant harmonics. Irrespective of these operational credits, I detected slightly more road noise than desired.

Front seats offer plenty of support, which is complemented by generous headroom but only adequate legroom.

Large sheets of glass line all four sides of the Pilot, treating occupants to excellent all-around visibility. Front seats offer plenty of support, which is complemented by generous headroom but only adequate legroom. Unfortunately, the tilt steering column does not telescope and the foot pedals are non-adjustable. These shortages may impede certain body shapes from finding the ideal driving position, although I had no such difficulty.

Second row comfort is pleasing, with better than expected legroom. Third row seating is typical of this segment, meaning it's quite cramped and largely unsuitable for adults during lengthy excursions.

Cargo convenience maximized
A substantively flat load floor is easily achieved by folding the second and third row seats. I thought the ease of performing this task was particularly noteworthy, especially as it applies to the second row. Unlike many of its competitors, the Pilot's second row seatbacks drop quickly without the need to remove head restraints or flip-up the bottom seat cushions.

Also impressive is the multi-function centre storage console, which adapts to match a variety of stowage needs. Additional pockets and storage sites can be found throughout the vehicle as well.

Pilot Overall
Honda's Pilot is somewhat more "vanilla" than several of its competitors are, and that may be a good thing. Like a reliable friend, the unit is predictable, obliging and trustworthy with the family.
