2008 Land Rover LR3 HSE Review

7-1-2008

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

King of all jungles
Looking at it, one would think that the LR3 is incapable of navigating anything other than the urban jungle that is Montreal during rush hour. Even so, the numerous embedded systems make it a perfect example of its kind and practically impossible to stop.

The famous Terrain Response system, activated by a wheel at the base of the transmission, allows you to unhesitatingly attack any terrain, be it snow, sand, gravel, paving block, or rocky escarpment. In each case, the setting affects acceleration, braking, and even the suspension (its height can also be adjusted as needed) in order to optimize performance in any condition.

Having tested it on the muddy trails of an early spring, we found that the LR3 easily forges its way through several centimetres of mud, even when solidly bogged down. And it's so powerful that it can coolly tow over three tons without batting an eyelash.

All that thanks to its muscular 300-horsepower V8 engine, whose enthusiasm becomes apparent at the slightest pressure on the accelerator. Obviously, this engine combined with a 6-speed transmission, a little slow on the downshift but well spaced, encourages the full use of all that cavalry, no matter the circumstances.

A word of caution, however: too much exuberance can easily lead to the consumption of 18 litres of gas per 100 kilometres (I effortlessly managed 17,6 litres).

A tough little guy
The LR3 is not the most imposing of the line, but like its big brothers, it packs a punch, both in the city and in the country.

Dichotomous, my love of Land Rovers? Without a doubt. But I have to admit that with all its features, it satisfies every need. As long as you're willing to pay the price, while hoping that this time reliability is part of the package. Which has not always been one of the brand's strong points, let's not forget.
