2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Review

7-30-2008

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

The auditory adroitness accompanies typical driving functions in a demure but defined fashion. Everyone in the car knows that something big is lurking, but to this point it's barely given a hint of its magnitude. When the coast is clear and within legal bounds, the CLS63 AMG will explode with a force that requires strong neck muscles to hold one's head away from the head restraint as a guttural roar invades the ear canals and permeates the body.

I find the exterior lines of the CLS exotic and lustful.

In lightening speed the big sedan has worked its way through three gears and is headed to "jail" territory if the right foot isn't soon lifted. 0-100 km/h is achieved in the realm of 4.5 seconds, and there's no indication that the CLS63 AMG is running out of ferocity; in fact, at 100 km/h it feels as though it's just finding its legs and craves to continue the bloodthirsty sprint.

CLS63 AMG Wrap
Although the logic can't be defended, there's something very primitive and gripping about power. Even those who shun anything more than the lethargy of a Smart car are seduced, reluctantly so, by big power--of which the CLS63 AMG has massive amounts.

In our hedonistic society, power equates to money; or is that money equates to power? Either way, plenty of cash flow is needed to flout the CLS63's AMG-derived power. With a price-as-tested sticker of $144K, and gas consumption similar to that of a Boeing jumbo jet, power has its price, literally.
