2008 Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI Review

The numbers, please!
Mileage is a big selling point for diesels- especially since a comparably torquey V8 can rip through a tank of unleaded faster than a chainsaw through an ice sculpture.

Mileage on my watch averaged about 13L / 100km, with speedy highway cruising using less than 11L / 100km. That's notably better than just about any comparable V6 gas powered machine- none of which make anywhere near this much torque.

Additionally, the diesel powerplant poses less of a performance and mileage hit when towing. That's a good thing- as the ML can haul around over 7,000 lbs behind it.

It is notably soft and laid-back while cruising- with minimal exterior noise finding its way in.

Capable Safety

Generous ground-clearance and the traction of automatic four wheel drive combine with hill descent assist and a rough-road setting for the powertrain to help drivers out on the road less travelled. Electronic stability control and a whole arsenal of airbags are standard as well.

Finer Details
Other features on the $70,000 tester included a radar-guided parking assistant, powered liftgate, OnStar-style SOS button, Bluetooth telephone synchronization, automatic climate control and rear-seat DVD screens for each outboard passenger. There's a screen up front too- for a DVD-based navigation system. It gives good directions, but it's far from the best on the market for user friendliness.

This is an SUV that effortlessly comes off as a fantastic looking and well equipped family hauler, but the price suggested it was short few features. Things like a backup-camera and power lumbar support for the seats were missing. Xenon lights, additionally, are optional.

On the road
The ML is unquestionably luxurious, but some will find the ride just a bit too comfortable. Owners upgrading from a sedan or wagon will likely find the light, effortless steering and spongy suspension don't work wonders for highway confidence. It is possible to make something this size handle more confidently without ruining its ride. Thing is, ML is notably soft and laid-back while cruising- with minimal exterior noise finding its way in.

Automatic or motorized features abound, and require nothing of the driver beyond hopping on board and enjoying the gorgeous leather upholstery and simple, elegant interior.

To diesel or not to diesel?
Mercedes has done a top-notch job on this mill. It delivers small-V6 fuel consumption alongside the stump-pulling torque of a massive V8. At around $1,500, the diesel engine will likely save you money in the long run here.

Think of the ML 320 CDI like a unique and efficient luxury sedan that likes snowstorms, muddy trails and towing toys around.
