2008 Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI Review

5-27-2008

Irritating audio system
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI offers a comprehensive list of features, including heated seats and steering wheel, a sunroof, automatic climate control and Burl Walnut wood trim. As for the Harman/Kardon stereo, I found it both pleasant and irritating at times.

You see, the sound quality is remarkable, but when you start the engine in a navigation-equipped ML ($1500 option), you have to wait several seconds before the COMAND interface is ready. On the plus side, a 6-CD changer, MP3 playback and SIRIUS satellite radio are included to provide music lovers with more flexibility.

There's plenty of room up front and a fair amount in the back. Access to the cabin is made easier thanks to the aluminum running boards ($750). The rear hatch is large and allows easy access to the cargo area, but it takes seemingly forever to open due to the slow-acting shocks. Interior build quality is impressive, as is material selection.

Tough competition
The 2008 ML320 CDI starts at $61,400, meaning its direct rivals include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7 3.6, BMW X5 3.0si, Cadillac SRX, Infiniti FX35, Land Rover LR3, Lexus RX 400h, Porsche Cayenne and Volvo XC90 3.2.

These SUVs are all powered by 6-cylinder engines and boast about the same equipment level as the ML320. However, as we speak, none of them is available with a diesel -- at Audi and BMW, this will no longer be the case starting this fall. Meanwhile, the RX 400h is the only one to use a hybrid powertrain.

Wrap-up
Despite a few shortcomings, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI plays a good game in this tough market segment. For those who don't want a diesel engine, the base ML350 retails for $59,900. Of course, there are other costlier, more expensive trim levels.

But for rich yet sensible buyers who invest their money wisely and are interested in the diesel's fuel-saving potential, the ML320 CDI proves to be a versatile, ultra-safe SUV, one that's highly enjoyable every day of the year, especially during winter.
