2008 Nissan Rogue First Impressions

8-31-2007

Standard VDC and TCS
A traction control system (TCS) is part of every Rogue, whether with FWD or AWD. The same goes with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), which uses sensors to monitor and correct the path of the vehicle. In the event of a loss of control, the system cuts the engine power and applies braking power to specific wheels to help the vehicle get back in the driver's intended path. The AWD system, meanwhile, benefits from Nissan's latest innovations. At first, it distributes power equally to all four wheels, which is very convenient in the snow or in the mud. Beyond 30 kph, power is shifted to the front. If the system detects a loss of grip, it will transfer up to 30 percent of the available torque back to the rear wheels.

The Rogue's driving aids should help it feel confident during winter driving.

Capable suspension
Nissan paid special attention to the suspension in order to make sure that the Rogue can deliver solid handling and a comfortable ride. This is one aspect most compact SUVs tend to overlook. A multi-link rear suspension was chosen to increase cargo room. Both the front and rear suspensions' shock absorbers do a great job of controlling the rebound to minimize bodyroll.

Friendly and spacious interior
The Rogue is a true four-passenger vehicle. Four adults can find all the comfort they need. Rear-seat legroom and shoulder room is very generous. A young kid will be able to sit in the middle of the rear bench, but for short trips only. Of the two SL models I tested, I preferred the one with cloth-appointed seats because the leather seats proved to be too hot. As mentioned earlier, the Premium Package includes heated front seats, which will be greatly appreciated come wintertime. Overall, the seats are comfortable, but their side bolsters are not massive enough to keep your body in check during tight turns.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and finish of the dashboard and the overall layout. Quality and attention to detail are evident. Easy to read, the instruments and controls are judiciously spread out while the design is, again, sporty-looking. Storage compartments are aplenty and well thought out, except for the door-mounted pockets (due to the speakers). Armrests are cushioned for enhanced comfort. The glove box is ultra deep : you can even use a partition to divide all your stuff. At last, you can store more than the requisite owner's manual. A large bin inside the center console will gladly accommodate your CDs, cell phone, pens, coffee cup, water bottle or other similar items. As for passive safety, the Rogue meets the most stringent government standards thanks to front, front-side and side curtain airbags.

The interior layout is well thought out and the instruments are easy to read.
