2008 Saturn Astra First Impressions

11-22-2007

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

Two models, two trim levels
Buyers don't have a lot of choices other than the 3- or 5-door configuration. For instance, the 3-door Astra only comes in XR trim, while the 5-door variant offers XE and XR models. Ranging from $17,900 to $21,225, the Astra is obviously a bit more expensive than most competitors -- or is it?

The 5-door Astra comes in base XE trim and high-end XR trim.

Admittedly, even in base trim, this Saturn includes a number of amenities that make many rivals green with envy. Among them are cruise control, remote entry, free OnStar assistance for one year, 4-wheel disc brakes and even a oil pan heater. The latter is standard fare in Canada (due to our rougher climate) and optional in the U.S.

The Astra XR adds such features as 17-inch wheels, a premium audio unit and a sportier suspension. On the 3-door variant, meanwhile, the steering goes from heavily assisted to light and sporty. This calibration is optional on the 5-door XR.

In terms of design features, Saturn's Astra is identical to Opel's (GM's European division), except for the bumpers that were modified to meet North American safety regulations. And despite an all-European, modern-looking appearance, the 3-door model is unique, sitting closer to the ground to enhance its sporty character. Surprisingly, both Astra models offer the same trunk; at 1,265 liters (100 less for the 3-door), the cargo capacity is also above the segment average.

Cargo room is above average.
