2008 smart fortwo passion cabriolet Review

6-18-2008

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

The fortwo is not a powerhouse when it comes to acceleration but it's capable of scooting about town with sufficient fortitude to easily keep pace with traffic. It's also highway capable, cruising comfortably at 100+ kph.

Driving the fortwo
Once the fortwo's inherent mechanical quirkiness has been endeared, operating the highly maneuverable micro car becomes quite satisfying. Its agility and nimbleness engenders fun and enjoyment. I found myself purposely seeking tight parking situations and obstacle-ridden locales just to meet and beat the challenges.

The fortwo feels stable on the highway, and is less affected by buffeting than I anticipated. It stops very quickly when needed however brake actuation is not as progressive and linear as I would like. Helping to keep the little guy right side up when things become unglued is an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which by the way can not be driver-disabled.

The agility and nimbleness of the 2008 smart fortwo engenders fun and enjoyment.

As one would expect from such a short wheelbase, the fortwo delivers a choppy ride that feels fairly rigid; it's by no means punishing but don't expect to be spoiled, or anything close to it.

Plenty of safety fortwo
The main cabin structure is referred to as the Tridion safety cell. Thanks to advanced engineering, it's a high-strength steel safety cell that becomes a survival space in the event of a crash. Front and side airbags provide additional occupant protection.

smart fortwo is smart
The fortwo represents a new and necessary direction in automotive design and function. As gas prices soar and congestion increases, vehicles such as the fortwo will garner the respectful and comments that they deserve. And I won't need Midol.
