2008 T-Rex 1400R Road Test (video)

10-23-2007

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

How much?
The 2008 T-Rex 1400R will cost $53,995 in Canada and $48,995 in the USA. There is about $10,000 in options that can be tacked on, such as a windshield or other accessories.

You might never want to let it go...

The most direct competitors are definitely the Ariel Atom 2, which starts at $52,000 USD for a base 205-hp model and $57,500 USD for a 300-hp version. The KTM X-Bow is not yet on sale in North America.

Compared to the exotic supercars, though, the T-Rex is a bargain for the level of performance and exhilaration it provides.

The only thing is that the T-Rex is considered by many provinces and states as a motorcycle, which means you'll need a motorcycle license. In Canada, it's now classified as a TWV (three-wheeled vehicle), but every province has its own classification, and the company is working hard convincing every government that the T-Rex drives more like a car than a motorcycle. We'll keep you posted on any progression.

Conclusion
The T-Rex 1400R looks like nothing else on the road. It blasts off like a rocket and clings to the pavement like bubble gum on hot asphalt. It's a raw, back-to-basics thrill ride, a little like having your own rollercoaster. Its price may seem high for such an unpractical machine, but once you get addicted, which happens during the very first ride, you won't care about putting a second mortgage on the house to get one.

Fire-breathing acceleration
Eye-popping grip
Exhilarating driving experience

Needs a motorcycle license in most states and provinces
Limited practicality
