2008 Volvo V70 3.2 Review

5-17-2008

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

Having said that, safety will always remain at the forefront of Volvo's core values, even ahead of performance. Several technologies are banked on to improve occupant protection and peace of mind.

One of them is the much-publicized Blind Spot Information System (BLIS). Rear-facing digital cameras in the outside mirrors monitor traffic on either side. As a vehicle enters any of your blind spots, the system will alert you by flashing an orange light on the corresponding front door pillar.

Obviously, there's a full assortment of airbags and other advanced safety features, making Volvo the mother of all safe car companies.

Highlighted by a floating center console, the interior layout is clean and ultra-modern.

Modern, understated design
The interior of the 2008 Volvo V70 is similar to those of the automaker's fresh new products. Highlighted by a floating center console, the layout is clean and ultra-modern.

The result is flawless ergonomics and easy instrument reading. And because it's a Volvo, the V70 offers some of the most comfortable and versatile seats in its class.

Also worth mentioning is the sizeable cargo area, the easy access of which should become the benchmark for any future wagon.

On the road
I'd like to tell you how exciting this car is, but let's face it: while the V70 is a competent performer, the engine proves a tad harsh and the drive is a little too "sterile" to be rewarding. Fortunately, the adjustable suspension adds some life to the party. Of course, the mere size of this wagon fails to encourage aggressive maneuvers behind the wheel.

In the end, though, Volvo won its bet: the new 2008 V70 is attractive, competent and safe. Even better, it's as sensible as any car you will find... and further proof of Volvo's world-renowned expertise in this field.

Volvo won its bet: the new 2008 V70 is attractive, competent and safe.
