Yamaha introduces the 2009 Grizzly 550 FI, a middleweight ATV that completes the already strong Grizzly 450 and 700 lineup. This new machine inherits all the major features of its larger siblings while boasting a smaller displacement. Modern looks, a proven chassis and advanced technologies are all part of the package to help the Grizzly 550 take on an ultra-competitive market segment -- medium-displacement 4x4 utility ATVs.

Yamaha engineers took the opportunity to incorporate a number of significant engine upgrades, including new intake and exhaust ports, ceramic-plated cylinder walls, roller bearing rocker arms, a forged alloy piston and a chrome-moly connecting rod. With reduced friction and less vibrations, not to mention a nicely-calibrated electronic fuel injection system, the 550 FI engine delivers the sort of power and accelerations you would normally associate with larger-displacement machines.
Yamaha's exclusive Ultramatic transmission works effectively with the new power steering to make the riding experience easier and much more comfortable. The new electric power steering almost completely eliminates the efforts required from the rider, while absorbing shocks typically felt through the handlebars on manual steering machines. Meanwhile, the Ultramatic transmission provides four-wheel engine braking to add to the stopping power delivered by the four disc brakes.
The fully independent suspension with preload adjustability features a pair of gull-wing A-arms up front for increased ground clearance (without raising the center of gravity). It also helps the machine adapt to various terrains and loads more easily, while maximizing comfort and safety. Yamaha also came up with stronger polyethylene ball joint covers, to better protect them against rocks and tree branches.
In terms of ergonomics, your rear end will no doubt enjoy the thicker, softer padding of the rider seat, especially on long rides. The transmission shifter is now 23-mm longer for easier gear shifts. The digital instrument panel includes an odometer, two trip meters, a fuel gauge and a gear ratio indicator. The throttle lever has also been revised for friendlier operation.
