2009 Acura TL First Impressions

8-18-2008

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

Power and luxury
The 2009 Acura TL is powered by two engines. The basic version is a 3.5-litre V6 (replacing the old 3.2L) producing 280 hp. It boasts an extra 22 hp and reduces fuel consumption by almost 4%.

On the road, this engine (well known, as it's shared with other models like the MDX) proves flexible and linear, although the combined weight of two journalists did sometimes tax it during intense acceleration manoeuvres.

The basic version is a 3.5-litre V6 producing 280 hp.

But the real novelty here is the introduction of the 3.7-litre VTEC engine (also shared with other models) coupled with the SH-AWD system also found on the RDX and the RL.

With its extra power (some 25 hp), the outfitted TL fearlessly tackles the most demanding curves and hills. Acceleration is honest and decided and the driving experience is more pleasant. Even better, the engineers developped a suspension system specifically adapted to this powerful engine and increased the chassis' stiffness and torsion by nearly 30% in some areas, which guarantees a very stable, predictable ride.

Steering has also been modified to give more feedback (which no one will criticize), and automatic transmission with sequential mode and steering wheel paddles will be offered as standard equipment. This results in quick shifting responses and an RPM management system that allows rev matching while downshifting, a technique used by race car drivers.

While admittedly not an F1 car, the new TL's driving sensations are clearly superior to the previous generation's, and the SH-AWD system ensures a decidedly more dynamic ride, even at low speeds. The excellent handling of the car completes the driving experience.

A slight impression of understeering can be felt at the very most, probably caused by a too-tight trajectory rather than the car itself.

Of models and versions
Upon its arrival next October, the TL will only be available in two-wheel drive versions equipped with the 3.5-litre engine. It will nevertheless come in two flavours, basic and Tech, the latter a package that includes one of the most precise navigation systems in the industry as well as numerous gadgets, among them all possible sound system configurations.

The SH-AWD model will arrive a few weeks later and will also be available in basic and Tech versions. Whatever the model or version, the new TL is definitely a step forward in terms of ride and handling. As for the design, you be the judge.
