2009 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI First Impressions

3-10-2008

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

Beyond such proven technologies as VTG and common-rail injection, the system uses a 32.5-percent urea-based liquid mix that is directly injected into the exhaust pipes. In effect, high-precision injectors reduce the size of urea molecules to literally blow them into the catalytic converter. When mixing with exhaust gases from the engine, urea transforms nitrous oxide (NOx) particles into ammonia -- and ammonia into hydrogen and oxygen.

The Q7 is the first of a new generation of diesel vehicles to be introduced by Audi.

However, in order for this liquid solution to prove effective, it has to be heated; otherwise, it will freeze as soon as it reaches minus 11 degrees Celsius. Also, owners will have to remember to fill up the AdBlue tank, say, each time they go to their local dealership for an oil change.

More models
AdBlue will be available starting with 2009 models only, but in the meantime, Audi will expand its TDI-powered lineup. First, there's the Q7, which offers great performance and driving dynamics, as is expected, not to mention a ride quality that lives up to the Audi brand.

Hot on its heels will be the all-new A4 TDI and VW Touareg 2 TDI (the latter is scheduled to go on sale in Canada by the end of the year). As if it wasn't enough, the automaker confirmed the upcoming production of a mighty Q7 TDI V12 generating 500 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque, good for breaking the 100-kph barrier in less than 5.3 seconds!

Yet, it's hard to say whether Canadians are finally ready to embrace diesel-powered vehicles. Fortunately, Audi sure does!
