2009 Dodge Challenger Preview

5-15-2008

by Robert Obara , Auto123.com

The renowned Challenger SRT8 bumps power output to 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque routed through a standard limited-slip differential (on either transmission) to wide 20-inch SRT wheels. Up front are xenon headlights, and the hood's air inlet ducts are functional on this model. The SRT8 also features a high performance (but still compliant) suspension, upgraded Brembo brakes, bolstered SRT seats, and a performance information display.

Another Canada-only model is the limited-edition, SRT8 500, which will actually be badged as a 2008. It will be paying tribute to the 1960 Dodge Charger 500 with a unique performance suspension, steering, and exhaust. Carbon fibre hood stripes compliment the black, silver, or orange paint, while inside there is an upgraded audio system with Bluetooth phone connectivity.

Only the SRT8's $44,995 price (excluding $1,300 destination charge) has been released, but expect a similar pricing ladder as seen on the Dodge Charger: 62%, 70%, and 85% of the SRT8's price for the SE, SXT, and R/T models respectively. All Challengers have front, side and side-curtain airbags standard, and all rear seats fold (split 60/40). The Dodge Challenger is built in Brampton Ontario alongside the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300.
