2009 Dodge Ram First Impressions

8-27-2008

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

Dodge worked extensively to reduce all forms of noise and harshness in the new Ram, and their effort has paid off. The vehicle is remarkably refined in every operational aspect.

Immediately apparent was nothing; no engine noise, no wind noise, no suspension noise. This is a wonderfully quiet rig that delivers plenty of polish and sophistication, especially in its Laramie attire. The delightfully muted environment was not significantly affected by highway speed or rough road.

Ride quality is outstanding. The rear suspension performs as reported. It absorbs bumps and pavement deterioration without transmitting rear-wheel jar and hop usually associated with pickup trucks.

And in case one doubts the Ram's load carrying ability, Dodge supplied a tester with 1,000 lbs in its box. Despite the dead weight, the Hemi-powered Ram accelerated freely and stopped competently. Most important, though, was the truck's ability to remain securely planted to the road during cornering and when tolerating rough roads.

More content, less coin
The Laramie cab is composed of high-quality materials and finishings. Regardless of trim level, every knob, door pull and grip feels substantial and hefty; exactly what one expects in a solidly-built truck.

Immediately apparent was nothing; no engine noise, no wind noise and no suspension noise.

What one may not expect in such a truck is aesthetic appeal. The redesigned Ram cabin is far more appealing than it ever was, not to mention more comfortable and functional. Regardless of trim level, all Rams offer more standard content for 2009.

Among the equipment supplied as standard is an increase in safety and occupant protection. This includes an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) combined with roll mitigation, traction control, brake assist and brake-force distribution.

All Rams also receive anti-lock brakes and side-curtain airbags. Dodge should be commended for installing this content across the Ram lineup.

The Dodge reps on-hand made a point of emphasizing the Ram's value quotient. On average, a price reduction of $2,200 has been achieved while an average of $2,500 more content has been provided.

Ram final
Ford has delayed the release of their latest F-150 generation and General Motors has already deployed their latest salvo, the new Silverado and Sierra pickups. This gives Dodge the floor when the new Ram hits the showroom.

The Ram has definitely intensified the battle for 'King of the Pickups.' After a day behind the wheel, I came away impressed. Let the games begin.
