2009 Ford F-150 Lariat 4X4 Supercrew Review

4-9-2009

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

All V8 lineup
Last year's pointless V6 engine is no longer available. I say "pointless" because the base V8 supplies more power with equivalent fuel efficiency. My tester was enthusiastically propelled by the 'big daddy' in the V8-engine lineup, which is a 5.4-litre brute capable of dispensing 320 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm and 390 pound-feet of torque @ 3,500 rpm.

This mill was backed-up by Ford's new smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission featuring a 'tow/haul mode.' Together the engine and autobox supplied the big rig with surprising off-the-line gusto and impressive passing power. This duo is also commendably strong in the hills.

My tester carried me up a steep mountain highway without breaking a sweat. The same couldn't be said for me as I watched my average fuel economy slip to 22L/100km despite EnerGuide Canada's rating for my tester of 15.7 and 11.3L/100km city and highway driving respectively.

The pleasure and the pain
If fuel consumption is the "pain," ride comfort is the juxtaposing pleasure. The F-150 Lariat is a sweet truck that spoils its occupants with a serenely quiet cabin and a ride notably smooth for a 4X4 pickup.

The overall degree of operational refinement exhibited by my tester was outstanding. The big engine only announced its presence with any sort of notice when heavily tasked otherwise it never raised its voice much beyond a murmur.

In spite of its size and bulk, my tester was a relaxing rig to drive. It quite effectively concealed its true mass through secure, composed handling dynamics and strong braking performance. Visibility was excellent thanks to the F-150's large sheets of glass and elevated driving position.

The massive, split side-view mirrors adorning the front doors of my tester stuck out plenty but offered a comprehensive composite rearward view. In further aid of parking, the F-150 uses the navigation screen as a back-up camera if so equipped.
