2009 Honda Fit Sport Review

Honda Canada executives decided to go with a 2009 Fit Sport equipped with an automatic transmission, which retails for $20,659. The result was that the Fit wound up in the "over $18K" category along with the Vibe ($20,405) and Matrix ($19,460), two larger though equally roomy hatchbacks that offer similar equipment.

Despite its subcompact dimensions, the Fit can swallow plenty of gear... even more than a Mazda5!

Had they chosen a more minimalist model, like the DX-A ($17,480), which also offers an autobox and climate control, the Fit would have moved down to the "under $18K" category to face the Chevrolet Aveo ($17,085), smart fortwo passion ($17,123) and Toyota Corolla CE ($17,740). That's not what happened and it's just too bad... The dynamic drive, unique design, versatile interior and high build quality of the tiny Japanese car might have been enough to change the results of the competition.

Outstanding driving dynamics
The 2009 Honda Fit should have had the edge in several aspects. For instance, driving dynamics turned out to be way more predictable than both the Vibe and Matrix on the TestFest track.

With a lightweight, precise power steering and a great suspension system delivering fantastic stability in corners, the Fit felt safe and reassuring. It zigzagged through the course with effortlessness that rivals could not match due to their significant body roll and slow, heavy steering.

I should tell you, though, that the Fit Sport gets a rear stabilizer bar -- unlike lower-end models (DX, DX-A and LX). Moreover, the 16-inch tires (same size as the Vibe and Matrix) no doubt deliver more grip on the road.

In terms of visibility, the Fit also has the best of the Vibe and Matrix, which favor styling to the detriment of this fundamental safety feature. Their high beltline, wide roof pillars and microscopic rear window minimize visibility on each side and through the back -- enough to make parking maneuvers a nightmare.

The Fit Sport rides on 16-inch alloy wheels.
