2009 Honda Pilot Preview

5-14-2008

by Justin Pritchard , Auto123.com

Just like the last generation, power comes from a 3.5 liter V6 engine. Horsepower is modestly increased to 250, a gain of six ponies. This output still lags somewhat behind the market's standard, but Honda's Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) function and i-VTEC (Valve Timing Electronic Control) system are on board to keep the mill running as economically as possible. It'll run quietly and smoothly too- with available noise-cancellation technology and an active engine mount system to keep vibrations and unwanted noises out of the cabin.

Mileage is estimated around 9L /100km on the highway and 12.9 L / 100km in the city- though official ratings are not yet available. Engine power continues to flow to all four wheels through an automatic four wheel drive system which requires no driver involvement to operate. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and towing capacity is rated at a maximum of 4,500 lbs.

And now for the abbreviations. Pilot's safety story includes features like an advanced new braking system with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and brake assist. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is standard on all models, as is a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is on duty to protect occupants in a crash as well. Every Pilot incorporates curtain airbags and dual-chamber, front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS).

Needless to say, if you're in the market for an efficient, clever and safe family SUV, Honda appears to have you covered. Pricing and other details will be launched closer to the Pilot's on-sale date.
