2009 Lincoln MKS First Impressions (video)

6-9-2008

by Luc Gagné , Auto123.com

According to the automaker, the 2009 Lincoln MKS offers class-leading cargo capacity. However, a quick comparison shows that the Mercedes-Benz E-Class actually has a bigger trunk: 540 liters versus 521 for the MKS. Having said that, the Lincoln's is long and shallow, with a high, narrow opening -- not really convenient for loading medium or full-size luggage. For instance, you can fit small golf bags, the ones you carry on your shoulder, but not the big bags that require a cart. What's more, the rear seatbacks do not fold forward, meaning the cargo area is not flexible.

On the road, the ride is smooth with a little body roll. This is a Lincoln, after all, not a BMW! The power steering is very precise, though, while the brakes are easy to modulate.

Canadian specs

The Canadian MKS will be slightly different from its American counterpart. The lineup will include two trim levels: FWD and AWD. Features like Lincoln's Forward Sensing System, Intelligent Access, 19-inch wheels (18 in the U.S.), adaptive HID headlights and rear window sunshade will be standard.

The "next" MKS...
Lincoln has another trick up its sleeve: in order to keep up with the German rivals, a sportier MKS will be introduced within a year. It will be powered by a new EcoBoost V6 using direct injection and twin turbochargers to produce V8-like power (340 hp) while burning less fuel.

According to Mike Celentino, MKS Chief Engineer, "this model will be sold in limited numbers and will serve to show the world that Lincoln is also capable of developing true sports sedans."

In the meantime, the first deliveries of the 2009 Lincoln MKS will arrive in showrooms around mid-June. The base MSRP is set at $45,599.
