There are also subtle changes to report about inside, starting with a newly-designed, more refined-looking 4-spoke steering wheel. The environment grows more upscale with the addition of high-quality Artico leather. Finally, the all-new telematics system allows a more user-friendly operation of the navigation and audio systems.

Third, driving dynamics
Of course, you don't purchase a Mercedes-Benz ML, even a diesel model, based on visual appeal or character alone. It's more about the ride which, I must admit, is remarkably comfortable. After my recent trip to Vermont, where I test-drove the new ML320 BlueTEC over a few hundreds of kilometers, I was understandably unexcited about the prospect of getting back in my own car. Needless to say the fall back to Earth was quite painful.

The diesel powertrain generates maximum torque at only 1,600 rpm, making the driving experience much more entertaining. However, the steering, while precise, lacks some responsiveness and offers little feedback from the road.

Likewise, the suspension does a good job of filtering out road imperfections, but it suffers from body roll in sharp corners.

Yet overall, and especially compared to rivals, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML has nothing to be ashamed of. It's not only luxurious and superbly built but also environmentally-friendly thanks to the most advanced diesel technology currently available. This vehicle will likely prove to be just as successful as its predecessors.
