2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse First Impressions (video)

9-18-2008

Mississauga, Ontario - The Mitsubishi Eclipse gets a fresh new look for 2009. Well, kind of... You see, in order to bridge the gap between the latest-generation model (introduced back in 2006) and its eventual successor (expected by 2011 according to some sources), the sporty Japanese coupe benefits from various cosmetic changes that will put the car in line with the Lancer Evolution X.

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse has been redesigned to look more like the Lancer Evolution X.

Competing against such performance cars as the Ford Mustang, not to mention classy automobiles with a sporty side like the Chrysler Sebring Convertible, the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is impossible to mistake with its new front fascia. Angular lines define the large, trapezoidal middle section, which is flanked by similarly-designed fog light clusters.

The base GS model sports a body-colored trim, while the high-end GT-P model is all black and very intimidating, especially for the poor drivers who suddenly spot one in their rearview mirror. From the front, the new Eclipse looks like a ferocious shark that's right about to devour its prey!

In the back, the changes are more subtle. While the taillights are identical, the space allocated to the license plate is now larger. Also, the more prominent rear apron is set off by new dual tailpipes (GT-P only). And the deep growl coming from the latter is a true testament to the potential of this machine.

A different kind of sound system
As the engine revs up, the exhaust note becomes increasingly addictive and encourages a sportier type of driving. It's all backed by a decibel monster created by audio specialist Rockford Fosgate. This 650-watt unit comes standard with the GT-P coupe and both Spyder models. Featuring nine speakers, including an invasive, trunk-mounted subwoofer, it makes you feel like your favorite band is playing right next to you.

The Eclipse GT-P further stands out with a massive spoiler at the tip of the rear hatch. While it reduces rearward visibility for the driver, this wing is like the tail of a dangerous predator that's ready to pounce on a clueless victim.

A massive rear spoiler sets the Eclipse GT-P apart.
