2009 Toyota Corolla CE Review

6-24-2008

Now, for actual driving
Even the CE scores points, here. Thanks to the vertically adjustable driver's seat and the now telescopic steering wheel with tilt, a comfortable driving position is guaranteed. The standard instruments proved to be sufficient, and the various dials are clear and easy to read. Overall, the controls are easy to reach and operate. The only thing you'll need the owner's manual for is setting the clock. The ventilation system keeps the passenger compartment at a comfortable temperature in any season.

Despite a rather large bar up front, visibility is good all around. The rearview mirrors are a good size and cut down on side blind spots, and the windshield wipers are effective.

The gearshift lever feels comfortable in your hand, and although it is still a tad short on precision, shifting is smooth and the gear spacing is well suited to the car's purpose.

Passing is a breeze
The CE's 1.8-litre engine may be suitable for Sunday driving, but passing is a breeze in third gear, with the car going from 80 km/hr to 120 km/hr in 6.8 seconds and from 0 to 100 km/hr in around 10.5 seconds.

Although the CE comes with a standard antilock braking system and pressure-limiting valve, braking distances are still too long to my liking: with winter tires, I needed 44 metres and 51 metres to brake from 100 to 0 km/hr. With four season tires, I managed to cut those distances down by five metres. That being said, a car of this size should do better.

The Corolla's fuel consumption was 9.2 L/100 kilometres--not that I drove it like a sport car. It can do better, though, with a combined consumption of 7.5 L/100 km. I'd be interested to know what Corolla owners think of the car's fuel efficiency.
