2010 Toyota Prius Preview (video)

3-2-2009

by Rob Rothwell , Auto123.com

The hybrid-produced propulsion continues to meet the front wheels of the Prius after flowing through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This sophisticated unit has been made lighter and more efficient. It's also belt-less now, as is the engine, thanks to an electrically-driven water pump and electrically-actuated power steering.

The Tri-mode power feature enables drivers to customize the operation of the hybrid power system by simply pressing a button. Alternatively, the driver can let the Prius manage itself with the goal of providing the most efficient blend of performance and economy depending on driving needs.

The three modes include EV, which enables the Prius to be driven exclusively on battery power for several kilometres at speeds under 40 km/h or so (Once the battery depletes or the need for additional power is sensed, the engine activates). On Eco mode, the Prius calibrates its battery/engine interface to favour fuel economy. The final mode is Power, which is intended to favour performance.

Many new comfort and convenience features
The 2010 Prius will be available in five trim levels, which will ensure a broad range of pricing and options to meet the expectations of a wide array of buyers. New for 2010 is a solar-powered ventilation system, which will draw outside air through the car's cabin when it's parked in the hot sun.

The ventilation feature is augmented with remotely activated air conditioning. A key fob button will fully engage the air conditioning system using the vehicle's battery power for up to three minutes before entry-talk about a frosty reception!

A dynamic radar-controlled cruise control option is available along with Toyota's Park Assist technology, which essentially enables the Prius to park itself. We first saw this functionality on a Lexus flagship-how interesting that it should trickle down to Toyota's least ostentatious offering.

A voice-activated navigation system is also available along with a Pre-Collision Detection system. The Prius safety net also includes seven airbags and a vehicle stability control program.

Prius preview wrap
The 2010 Prius has reset the bar in the world of hybrid automobiles, and it's awfully high. The third generation of this globally recognized and admired car is more powerful, more fuel-efficient, larger and more comfortable. It also receives an extensive array of un-Prius-like content, which will undoubtedly expand its popularity with the masses, hybrid savvy or not.
